Before heading to the airport I wanted to stop at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge at the recommendation of a local redditor I found on /r/herpetology. Given that this place was right in the middle of a huge city I didn’t have a lot of optimism. I’ve found though that I’m eternally pessimistic before looking for critters and it doesn’t really get me anywhere and I am often pleasantly surprised. This turned out to be the place where I found the most salamanders, haha. I really wish I had more than an hour or so to explore it! Here are some of the salamanders I found:
There are four individuals there separated by lines. I think they’re
- Oregon Ensatina (Ensatina eschscholtzii oregonensis)
- ?
- Clouded Salamander (Aneides ferreus)
- Western Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon vehiculum)
I am still working on identifying the last three, I’m only even mostly sure about the first one, haha. I mostly just wanted to upload the photos before I forgot about them.
A side note: My ecology professor linked to this in his notes and I wanted to share. It’s pretty beautiful.
Always, really cool pictures!!!!
